The Instructor

João Marreiros - Founder of the Lab

My martial arts journey started in 2000, rooted in traditional Jiu-Jitsu and self-defense. In 2009, I transitioned into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and fully embraced the art. Over the years, I’ve competed extensively, earning multiple podium finishes at both national and European competitions.

Honorably, I earned my black belt under Robin Gracie, the youngest son of Helio Gracie, after years of dedicated training under my professor João Santos at Gracie Lisboa. This direct lineage connects me to the origins of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and shapes my respect for both its traditions and evolution.

My approach to teaching is shaped by more than just my time on the mats — it’s forged from 17 years as a military pilot. In the cockpit, precision, discipline and the ability to make clear decisions under pressure are crucial; they are the difference between success and failure. Along with a versatile professional career I bring that same mindset to my Jiu-Jitsu coaching. Every session is structured, intentional and tailored, with a focus on efficiency, situational awareness, and adaptability.

I believe to go beyond the classic “repeat the move 10,000 times” method. Instead, with a conceptual and structured approach, I break techniques into systems, helping understand the “why” behind the “how” so we develop both skill and strategic awareness.

In my view Jiu-Jitsu should be personalized, just like any proper training or diet plan. Physical limitations, injuries, flexibility, time constraints, personality and personal goals - these all matter. That’s why every private lesson at Lagos BJJ Lab is designed around you, ensuring progress that is both meaningful and sustainable.

Whether you’re learning your first escape, refining a championship strategy or looking to bring high-performance thinking into your training, my goal is to help you become more confident, competent and complete - both on and off the mats.
